Day 10 #100DaysOfOldDays

A young person of today may not know what this is.

It’s a scythe. It was used for cutting grass and harvesting crops. The lord of death, the Grim Reaper, carries one for harvesting souls at the end of their time on earth!

My dad used his in the 70’s and 80’s for cutting long grass. But our lawn at home was cut with a little push along mower; like this one in Lucy’s drawing.

The scythe was very sharp and dangerous. We were always warned never to go near it, and we never did. We played by the river instead. (That’s tomorrow’s story)

  1. Can you imagine harvesting an entire crop of hay with that thing? Margaret 21 said in one of my comments that she’s sticking with the current days. I’m with her on that even though I never had to use one. I’ve tried swinging one once. My mother-in-law used a real mower like Lucy’s drawing to keep her 1/3 of an acre of grass in shape. No wonder she lived to be 90.

    • Our ancestors were kept fit just by the work they did. But I agree with Margaret – I’m happy to be in the present times!
Those little mowers were hard work too. Fair play to your mother-in-law for keeping it up when she probably could have upgraded to an easier model.

      • After she developed dementia a young man came to her door and offered to mow it for her. She let him. She paid him $300 for his efforts. He let a little time go by and came back to “collect” for the work a second time. She paid him again. On the fourth go around, my husband’s aunt happened to be there and threatened to call the police if he did it again. That was the end of his mom’s check-writing days.
