Day 74 #100DaysOfOldDays
According to legend, a wild boar covered in poisonous bristles and possessed by an evil spirit once roamed the streets of Donegal killing everyone in his path. Local hunters took it upon themselves to rid the land of this treacherous beast, chasing him through to Sligo and into Lenadoon in Easkey, where he disappeared into the sea. He emerged from the waters at Enniscrone strand and continued his rampage, killing everyone in his sight.
The townsfolk joined forces with spears and poles and ran the boar out of town and slaughtered him in a field nearby. When the boar was dead, one man touched the bristles believing they were no longer poisonous; he dropped dead instantly. They buried the deadly beast under a mound of clay, giving the townland its name, Muckduff—Irish for ‘Black Pig’.
This sculpture of the Black Pig stands across the road from The Diamond Coast Hotel in Enniscrone. It was created by Cillian Rogers from Dromore West. It’s 4 metres long, 1.5 metres high and weighs 3 tonnes.

Gracious! That’s not a pig. It’s a rhino with his tusk cut really short. . . 😄 🥸 🤠

Gloria, thanks for joining in this week. That is quite a story. I wonder why the artist didn’t include the bristles? Maybe he did and I didn’t see them. What a great story. Lucy captured it well including the red eyes. It kind of reminds me of the story in the Bible of the herd of pigs that Jesus sent the evil spirits into when he cleansed Legion. They rushed off a cliff and drown in the sea. Pigs really get a bad rap, don’t they? LOL

Yes Marsha, there are some horror stories about poor pigs! I’m not sure if the bumpy lines are meant to be the bristles on this black pig. I must look closer the next time I’m passing!

We have javelina here which are like wild boars. They eat gardens and can be a little dangerous. I did a couple of whimsical posts on them. Here’s one that is a little artsy. http://alwayswrite.blog/2020/07/26/yellow-stills-or-still-yellow/

I’ll pop over. I haven’t heard the name javelina before!

I hadn’t either until we came to Arizona in July of 2020 and I read the plaques on those cute creatures. In real life they are brown and have bad breath.

I think the comments are closed on your post….or I need new glasses! 🤓
The javelina looks very much like a pig. Cute statue!
I love the marigold bathroom. Yellow is such a beautiful uplifting colour. 💛
Earlier this morning I was watching a cute video of raccoons and decided that I’d love a pet raccoon.
I’ve changed my mind. I’ll stick with my dog! 😅

My comments close automatically after 30 days because I was getting so many spammers on old posts. Now all they can do is like the posts. You definitely don’t want a pet raccoon. They are cute, but very destructive. You read about my run in with one. They tried to get in our cat cage. We had put insulation around it for the winter months, and they scratched it trying to get in to get the cat food. We quit leaving food outside at night even though the cage was locked. Dogs are a better pet bet, my friend. 🙂
