#100DaysOfThoseDays – Bookmark

Day 3 #100DaysOfThoseDays

Today is World Bookmark Day

I have several bookmarks but my favourite one is the one in this photo. It was a present from a friend. It’s not every book it suits though.

The problem with bookmarks is that they’re easily mislaid, lost, and in my case, eaten by our dog. I’ve often had to resort to the type of bookmarks I used when I was a child; a piece of cardboard, an old playing card, a length of wool, a strip of paper, a photograph or a ribbon. (I like using ribbons) But I WILL NOT bend a page as my bookmark. I have done in the past… years ago… I was a child… I knew no better…I’m sorry now! It will never happen again. Everyone did it back in those days.

Memorial card bookmarks have become popular in recent years. I think they’re a lovely idea.

The earliest existing bookmark dates from the 6th century AD and it is made of ornamented leather lined with vellum on the back.

All sorts of things can be used as a bookmark. I was flicking through an old book recently, that my mother bought in a charity shop or car boot sale. This old British Telecom bill fell out of it. It might not have been used as a bookmark, maybe more of a safe keeping place.

The bill is an overdue amount of £57.50 in 1986, which is equivalent to roughly £162/€183 today. Perhaps the owner stuck in into the book to ignore it. Out of sight, out of mind.

Thank you for reading!

I enjoy writing about times gone by. My daily posts are written off the cuff and just for fun.

My novel Secrets in the Babby House is of a more serious nature and took more time and effort to put together. If you enjoy the jist of my writing you might enjoy reading my novel.

A story of love, deception, and stolen diaries filled with sins and secrets. Set in a gossipy small town in Ireland at a time when marriage is for keeps and sexuality is repressed, Secrets in the Babby House is a family saga over three decades that starts in 1956.
