Whatever’s in my Handbag

Daily writing prompt
What is the most important thing to carry with you all the time?

Well, that depends on where I’m going and what I’ll be doing.

If ‘all the time’ means even at home, my answer is my varifocals. Unfortunately, I left them in Italy two weeks ago and I’m lost without them. Lucky I still have my reading glasses.

When I take the dog for a walk, the first thing I check my pocket for is doggie poop bags. And I do take them home after I use them. Too often I see full poop bags lying on the ground. Why bother bagging it just to dump it? I don’t understand people sometimes!

I also need a tissue when I go for walks. My eyes water in the wind. Even a gentle breeze in Ireland can make your eyes water because the wind is cold 98% of the time.

I also take my phone and earbuds because I listen to audio books and podcasts. I do bring my smile because I don’t want to appear unsociable to those I meet along the way. Although, I meet many people who don’t look or smile or acknowledge my existence. I understand that, because some days I don’t want to talk to people, but a wee smile isn’t that hard. Don’t worry, returning a smile to a stranger doesn’t mean you’re inviting them to your house.

Back in the day…. yes yes, I know I’m always going on about back in the day, but back in the day, everyone acknowledged everyone on the streets of the little town where I grew up. If you hadn’t time for a chat, fine, a quick hello and a smile was always plenty. It’s getting less and less common as the years go on.

However, I can be a bit of an introvert sometimes. Earlier this week I wanted to live in a bunker as far away from everyone as possible, but I’m over it and I like people again. Maybe I need therapy!

What was the question again? Oh yes, the most important thing to carry with me at all times.

Going away for a day; I need my glasses as always, sunglasses (even in wintertime, the glare hurts my eyes), phone, my kindle or paperback, notebook, pens and pencils, bottle of water, purse, tissues, hand cream, headache tablets, feminine hygiene products because you just never know, hand sanitizer and a lipstick.

I do think I’m a little bit obsessive about the things I feel the need to carry in my handbag. Maybe I’m normal. You do not want to know what I need when I’m going away for a weekend!
