St Patrick’s Church – #ThursdayDoors

A random walkabout in Newport Co Mayo led me to this fine building, St Patrick’s Church.

It was built in 1914-8 and opened in 1918.

There’s nothing quite like the smell inside a church; old, smoky, woody, sweet. The scent in St Patrick’s seems more raw than the usual churchy smells. There’s no fresh paint or furniture polish masking the alluring scent of old wood and stale Myrrh and frankincense.

Do smells echo in high-ceilinged churches? I feel like they do.

Shop – #ThursdayDoors

Isn’t this the cutest little art shop?

Taken on Inishbofin, a fabulous little island on the West Coast of Ireland.

Unfortunately, the few times we passed it, it was closed so we didn’t get to go inside!

Next time, maybe!

Oldest Pub – #ThursdayDoors

This is the door into Seán’s Bar, the oldest pub in Ireland. It’s 1,115 years old.

A cosy welcoming little place that’s well worth a visit if you’re ever in Athlone in Co Westmeath. And very importantly, the Guinness is good!

By the Sea on an Island – #ThursdayDoors

These photos were taken on Inishbofin – an idyllic island off the coast of Galway. If I could own a house by the sea, I’d have one like this.

I wonder how old the door is on this one. Would it be the original? Old doors will last many years as long as they’re well looked after. It looks pretty old.
