I’ve chosen Clear Blue for today’s #picoftheweek2023

This photo was taken on the idyllic island, Inishbofin, off the West coast of Galway. I have some beautiful photos from our few days here on the Island and some things I’d like to say about the island itself. That’ll be a separate blog post I think!

The Philanthropist #99WordStories

99-word stories for Charli Mills at Carrot Ranch; August 1, 2022, prompt: Write a story that features someplace remote in 99 words (no more, no less). It can be a wild sort of terrain or the distance between people. What is the impact of a remote place? Go where the prompt leads!

Dressed as an old peddler woman, I scrutinise everyone that gets off the small passenger ferry. No strangers today; only a few locals returning from work on the mainland. No city folk looking to escape from civilisation. And no uniforms looking for me.

I stroll along the shore, watching two puffins floating lazily on a crestless wave—in tune with Island life. This is where I belong now. Not in that shit hole prison.
I’m not a killer. I’m a philanthropist.

‘Put me out of my misery,’ he begged as he lay in his sick bed. So I did!

Rescue 116 in 99words

When I read Charli’s 99 word prompt this week, I immediately remembered the tragic events at Blackrock Island in the very early hours of March 14th 2017.

Life savers on any body of water. It can be a formal Coast Guard, historical or contemporary. It could be an individual who unexpectedly takes on the role.

Rescue 116

Irish Coast Guard helicopter

Called into the night

Black ocean swells

Rocky terrain in sight

Find Blacksod Bay

Refuel at the lighthouse

Where the keeper awaits

No mayday distress

Black box tells

Of that early misty morn

Winchman yelled ‘come right’

Duffy said ‘we’re gone’

Didn’t make it to the lighthouse

Hit Blackrock instead

Two were lost at sea

Two were found…now dead

Ciarán Smith

Father of three

Paul Ormsby

Lived for family

Captain Dara Fitzpatrick

Mother sister friend

Captain Mark Duffy

All heroes till the end

The nation mourned

We’ll never forget

Rescue 116

Saviours we never met
