My Favourite Word is…

What’s your favorite word?

I have more than one favourite word.

I have words that I love because of their meaning.

Joy, because I like to feel joy.

Summer, because I associate it with sunshine, sandals, cool dresses, cold drinks, and ice cream.

Christmas, because I love the Christmas tree, the smell of mulled wine and mince pies, being with close family, and evenings by the fire.

Coffee – no explanation needed.

There are so many words I just love the sound of.

Blaze, gaze, dazzle. Words that contain the letter Z are snazzy! Seeing and hearing them makes me think of fireworks.

Pop, flounder, ruffle, blush, tickle, hoot, sparkle, mesmerise, whisper, tingle, crumble, fascinate. These are fun-sounding words.

I have words that make me want to eat sweets and drink hot chocolate. Glaze, maple, sticky, crystal, floss, delicate, mellow, yellow, pink, golden, jolly, bubble, fizz, syrup.

There is a word that I absolutely love. A small simple word that reminds me of the good old days, home comforts, fresh food, and security. It makes me think of pottery and little craft shops beside the sea. JUG. Yes, I adore the word jug.

I love how the word jug tries to avoid leaving my mouth. It scurries to the back of my throat and sticks itself there, so that I never forget about it. (No, that’s not weird.)

And guess what… I have a fine collection of jugs.

My wee jug family.
This is my favourite. It’s a vase, I know, but it’s a jug vase! One of my best friends, Roisin, gave it to me as a present. She knows me so well!

Fun Fact

The second edition of the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary contains 171,476 words in current use and 47,156 obsolete words. Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, including the addenda section, has over 470,000 entries. This doesn’t include slang and jargon words.
