BodyTalk #SoCS

This week, Linda G Hill gives us the word ‘rest’ as her Stream of Consciousness Saturday (#SoCS) prompt.

How many people in the world still consider Sunday as a day of rest? It’s a thing of the past for most people here in Ireland. If we’re not working, we’re off doing other things. Life is fast-paced now. We don’t have time for resting!

When your body is tired let it rest

Go your own pace, your life is not a test

When your feet ache, and you can’t walk another mile

Stop, take a rest, and put them up for a while

When your mind is weary, your thoughts are in a mess

Take a break, relax, don’t worry, don’t stress. REST!

Stephano Just Made my Day #SoCS

Linda G Hill’s Stream of Conscious Saturday (#SoCS) prompt this week is “icing in the cake”. Write about the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the phrase “icing on the cake.”

I was sitting here in the kitchen with my pen and pad, thinking about the cliché, the icing on the cake, when in walks Stephano with a bag of groceries. Interrupted my thoughts yes, but then handed me my new favourite sweet treat…coffee traybake from Supervalu. I squealed like a child who just got a new puppy! These coffee traybakes are not always available — or maybe they are but we’re just not quick enough to beat the rush.

Supervalu Coffee Traybake

This all started last year when I took a sudden notion that I wanted coffee cake. You’d think it would be easy to find but no. None in the coffee shops, or the bakeries, or the supermarkets.

Then one day Stephano arrived home with these absolutely scrumptious squares of decadence. Spongy and moist, rich with the flavour of coffee. But it’s the icing on the top that makes these the most delicious cakes I’ve ever had. So creamy and melty, with little shavings of nubbly dark chocolate sprinkled on top. I can’t help but close my eyes as the textures mesh together in my mouth. Savouring every morsel.

I’ll have another one at four o’clock. Today is a good day!

It’s probably just as well that they’re not available all the time.

Last #SoCS

Near the end they said

Not long left now

I rubbed my chest

I furrowed my brow

Somewhere else I’d rather be

Other folk I’d rather see

I looked ahead and saw them there

My faithful friends waiting for me

My legs like jelly

They couldn’t move fast

But I crossed the line

Even though I came last

Marathons are not for me

I find them quite bizarre

Will I ever run another one

Maybe I will—if it’s not too far

For Linda G Hill’s Stream of Conscious Saturday #SoCS

Use “near/far.” Use “near,” use “far,” use them both if you’d like. In fact, if you start your post with one and end with the other, you get bonus points!

#SoCS Monkey Puzzle

Stream of Consciousness Saturday #SoCS prompt for this week is ‘puzzle’. Use it any way you’d like.

I used to look at monkey puzzle trees in stranger’s gardens and thought how beautiful they looked. I wanted one. I used to say that when I’d have my own garden, I’d plant a monkey puzzle tree.

I never did. Do you know why? Because foolishly I allowed myself to be influenced by someone else’s opinionthat the monkey puzzle tree is ugly!

I was an awful eejit!

Yes, I could plant one now if I wanted to, but our garden where we live now is quite small. I wonder if there’s such thing as a miniature monkey puzzle tree.

Holy guacamole…..I’ve just discovered that I’ve been spelling miniature wrong all these years. I thought it was minature! Well, now I’m puzzled as to how I didn’t know this before now! Obviously, it’s not a word I’ve used too often (if ever) in my writing because my spell checker would have flagged it. The dunce’s corner for me today!
