Cook Like a Boss. Day 3.

Day 3 of Cookery Camp and Little Miss Nine is as keen as ever. (Of course I had faith…tut tut)

Today, Chef Jeffers from Forestside Cookery School will be teaching 220 children how to bake perfect cookies and red velvet cake.

No knives needed today…except to cut the cake. Keep reading!

Red velvet Loaf Cake: Lots of weighing out to do and Little Miss Nine learned from the last two days exactly how to do that.

We would really love a big fat mixer like the one Chef Jeffers has, but for now we have to make do with our little electric whisk. It takes longer to beat the butter and sugar until it’s white and fluffy with this wee “toy”, so I had to help with that part. I think her hand went a bit numb after a while!

We didn’t have red gel food colouring so we used ordinary food colouring. I didn’t know about the gel type – I don’t bake very often. Little Miss Nine loved pouring the red into her mixture.

Perfect Cookies: This has got to be the easiest cookie recipe I’ve ever seen. I’ve attempted cookies once before and I remember it was such a rigmarole from start to finish, I was knackered by the time they were done.

Little Miss Nine creamed the butter and sugar just like earlier. Then added flour and bread soda. Mixed it with her wooden spoon. Then added an egg. Mixed some more.

Not sure what went wrong here…but it was very crumbly. I got her to add a wee bit of water to the dough and that did the trick. She rolled it into balls. Simple!

At this point I realised we had run out of parchment paper. So we put the balls on a greased tray. (There’s always more ways than one)

180c for 15 minutes

When the cookies came out of the oven, Little Miss Nine pressed buttons on top. Chocolate makes everything even more delicious. They were indeed the perfect cookies.

The cake didn’t turn out as red as we thought it would. Maybe because we didn’t have the gel colouring. However, it looked like a real cake and tasted divine. We didn’t have cream cheese so Little Miss Nine didn’t get to make the frosting for the cake.

It looks more red in real life.

Sure, we couldn’t serve all this on anything less than the good china. Out it came and we enjoyed our little tea party.

What else would you be doing on a rainy afternoon?

Stephano had to go the whole hog and have ice cream with his!

Next time I’m home, I am heading to your house for afternoon tea and lunch (I want some artisan pizza) and dinner….might as well just stay with ya the whole time – buttons on the cookies and red velvet cake….yummy!! Chef Little Miss Nine is all that and a packet of crisp – well done 🙂

      • I’m loving it – starving looking at it all hehe 🙂 I’m sitting hear eating my plain blueberries wishing she was here making it in to blueberry pie or something yummy!! Can’t wait for tomorrow. I can only imagine the excitement (stress) in the kitchen during all this but these are the best days!! Have fun…
